CHAPTER EIGHT:
ASHA
I stood in the control room watching as one by one my squad-mates came out of their command centers. They looked awful. I was about to rip them to shreds for heading into that acid rain. But when I saw their faces, all I could feel was sympathy. “You’re covered in red sores! You poor fools. Didn’t your mamas ever teach you to come in out of the rain?”
Jin looked up at me sadly. “I thought we had lost you back in the rain. We went in after you.”
I hugged him gently. “Silly boy. I just went off to tag a nice whitewashed wall with spray paint. My GPS and com were down and then the suit flashed a malfunction warning. A drone beamed it back up to HQ and I ended up back here. My suit is in for repairs now.”
“You could have let us know,” Blaze said accusingly. “You shouldn’t have left us once you knew your com wasn’t working.”
I didn’t have time to respond. The door flew open and Sergeant what’s-his-face stormed in. “What did you people do to my suits?” he demanded. His friendly, happy tone was gone, replaced by seething anger. “This was supposed to be a harmless drill, but now your suits need to get detoxed from the acid rain. You’re all docked until tomorrow!” He wheeled to look at me and pointed a stubby finger in my face. “Except you. You get to go down alone in a solo challenge along with the rest of the cadets.” He didn’t wait for a reply, but stormed out as angrily as he had entered.
“We are in very hot water.” Jin shook his head sadly. “I’m amazed he didn’t boot us from the program for this. We’re two for two in terms of fails.”
“That’s why we’re The Impossibles!” I laughed, reaching up to put my arm around his shoulder. “Don’t worry about it. We lived to fight another day. I’ve got this.” My stomach growled. “Anyone else hungry?”
Blaze checked the schedule that had been tacked to our wall while we were in the battle. “Looks like lunch is next. It’s in the mess hall. After that, you get to do the solo battle, Asha. Without us,” she groaned. This must have been so hard for her, poor girl. She had trained her whole life for this and I think we were a big disappointment to her.
Zane stretched his sore muscles and yawned. “I’m brown bread from that last battle. I could use a nice big sanger!”
Brown bread? Sanger? That boy had more strange expressions than I could count. Most of his words weren’t getting translated through my universal translator implant! I assumed brown bread meant toast, like feeling burnt out. That’s how I felt. Maybe a sanger was a sandwich? We walked out with the rest of the recruits and found the mess hall not too far away. It was a big cafeteria with trays and stations for hot and cold food from all over the world.
